Business Department:
The Business Department at Saltfleet offers a wide variety of business courses that challenge and excite students. Courses include topics on Business Ownership, the Impact of Information Technology, International Business, Investing, Accounting, Marketing, and Business Law.
Classes provide a good mix of theoretical knowledge, hands-on practical projects, presentations, guest speakers and other technological media to instill the business concepts. Coupled with relevant learning resources and passionate teachers, students find out where Business plays a part in their future!

Grade Nine Courses:
BTT1O1 Information and Communication Technology in Business, Grade 9, Open
This course introduces students to information and communication technology in a business environment and builds a foundation of digital literacy skills necessary for success in a technology driven society. Students will develop word processing, spreadsheet, database, desktop publishing, presentation software, and website design skills. Throughout the course, there is an emphasis on digital literacy, effective electronic research and communication skills, and current issues related to the impact of information and communication technology.

BBI2O1 Introduction to Business, Grade 10, Open
This course introduces students to the world of business. Students will develop an understanding of the functions of business, including accounting, marketing, information technology, human resources, and production, and of the importance of ethics and social responsibility. This course builds a foundation for further studies in business and helps students develop the business knowledge and skills they will need in their everyday lives.

BAF3M1 Financial Accounting Fundamentals, Grade 11, University/College
This course introduces students to the fundamental principles and procedures of accounting. Students will develop financial analysis and decision-making skills that will assist them in future studies and/or career opportunities in business. Students will acquire an understanding of accounting for a service and a merchandising business, computerized accounting, financial analysis, and current issues and ethics in accounting.

BDI3C1 Entrepreneurship: The Venture, Grade 11, College
This course focuses on ways in which entrepreneurs recognize opportunities, generate ideas, and organize resources to plan successful ventures that enable them to achieve their goals. Students will create a venture plan for a student-run, school-based or summer business. Through hands-on experiences, students will have opportunities to develop the values, traits, and skills most often associated with successful entrepreneurs.

BMI3C1 Marketing: Goods, Services, Events, Grade 11, College
This course introduces the fundamental concepts of product marketing, which includes the marketing of goods, services, and events. Students will examine how trends, issues, global economic changes, and information technology influence consumer buying habits. Students will engage in marketing research, develop marketing strategies, and produce a marketing plan for a product of their choice.

BTA3O1 Information and Communication Technology: Digital, Grade 11, Open
This course prepares students for the digital environment. Using a hands-on approach, students will further develop information and communication technology skills through the use of business software applications. The concept and operation of e-business will be explored, and students will design and create an e-business website. The skills developed in this course will prepare students for success in the workplace and/or post-secondary studies.

BAT4M1 Financial Accounting Principles, Grade 12, University/College
This course introduces students to advanced accounting principles that will prepare them for post-secondary studies in business. Students will learn about financial statements for various forms of business ownership and how those statements are interpreted in making business decisions. This course further develops accounting methods for assets and introduces accounting for partnerships, corporations, and sources of financing.

BBB4M1 International Business Fundamentals, Grade 12, University/College
This course provides an overview of the importance of international business and trade in the global economy and explores the factors that influence success in international markets. Students will learn about the techniques and strategies associated with marketing, distribution, and managing international business effectively.
Prerequisite: : Any U, M or C preparation course in Business Studies, English, or Canadian and World Studies.
BOH4M1 Business Leadership: Management Fundamentals, Grade 12, University/College
This course focuses on the development of leadership skills used in managing a successful business. Students will analyse the role of a leader in business with a focus on decision-making, management of group dynamics, workplace stress, and conflict, motivation of employees, and planning. Effective business communication skills, ethics, and social responsibility will be emphasized throughout the course.
Prerequisite: Any U, M or C preparation course in Business Studies, English, or Canadian and World Studies.

The Canadian and World Studies Department
Canadian and World Studies courses will enable students to become responsible, active citizens within the diverse communities to which they belong. As well as becoming critically thoughtful and informed citizens who value an inclusive society, students will have the skills they need to solve problems and communicate ideas and decisions about significant developments, events, and issues.

The Drama Department at Saltfleet offers an exciting option for students to exercise creativity and expression.
Grade Nine Courses:
ADA1O1, Dramatic Arts, Grade 9 Open
This course provides opportunities for students to explore dramatic forms and techniques, using material from a wide range of sources and cultures. Students will use the elements of drama to examine situations and issues that are relevant to their lives. Students will
create, perform, discuss, and analyse drama, and then reflect on the experiences to develop an understanding of themselves, the art form, and the world around them.

Grade Ten Courses:
ADA2O1, Dramatic Arts, Grade 10 Open
This course provides opportunities for students to explore dramatic forms, conventions, and techniques. Students will explore a variety of dramatic sources from various cultures and representing a range of genres. Students will use the elements of drama in creating and communicating through dramatic works. Students will assume responsibility for decisions made in the creative and collaborative processes and will reflect on their experiences.

This course requires students to create and perform in dramatic presentations. Students will analyse, interpret, and perform dramatic works from various cultures and time periods. Students will research various acting styles and conventions that could be used in their presentations, and analyse the functions of playwrights, directors, actors, designers, technicians, and audiences.

ADA3O1, Dramatic Arts, Grade 11 Open
This course requires students to engage in dramatic processes and the presentation of dramatic works, and emphasizes the application of drama skills in other contexts and opportunities. Students will interpret and present works in a variety of dramatic forms, create and script original works, and critically analyse the processes involved in producing dramatic works. Students will develop a variety of skills related to collaboration and the presentation of dramatic works.

This course requires students to experiment individually and collaboratively with forms and conventions of both drama and theatre from various cultures and time periods. Students will interpret dramatic literature and other text and media sources while learning about various theories of directing and acting. Students will examine the significance of dramatic arts in various cultures, and will analyse how the knowledge and skills developed in drama are related to their personal skills, social awareness, and goals beyond secondary school.

This course emphasizes the analytical reading, writing, oral communication and thinking skills that students need for success in secondary school academic programs and their daily lives. Students will study and interpret texts from contemporary and historical periods, including short stories, poems, and short essays, and will investigate and create media works. An important focus will be the correct and effective use of spoken and written language.

This course emphasizes key reading, writing, oral communication, and thinking skills that students need for success in secondary school and their daily lives. Students will review, practice and strengthen reading and writing skills in order to be successful at the applied level. Lessons will be based on real-life experiences, and there is consistent teacher support to complete assigned tasks. Students will study short stories, newspaper and magazine articles and will describe and create media works.

In this course, students focus on extending their literacy and communication skills to prepare for success in their daily lives, in the workplace, or in the English Grade 11 Workplace Preparation course. The course is organized by strands that extend listening and talking skills, reading and viewing skills, and writing skills. In all strands, the focus is on refining foundational literacy skills and in using language clearly and accurately in a variety of authentic contexts. Students build on their strategies and engage in the processes involved in talking, listening, reading, viewing, writing, and thinking, and reflect regularly upon their growth in these areas.

This course emphasizes knowledge and skills that will enable students to understand media communication in the twenty-first century and to use media effectively and responsibly. Through analysing the forms and messages of a variety of media works and audience responses to them, and through creating their own media works, students will develop critical thinking skills, aesthetic and ethical judgment, and skills in viewing, representing, listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

This course emphasizes the development of literacy, critical thinking, and communication skills. EBT4O1/TGG4M1 Communication in the World of Business and Tech: Yearbook Production, Grade 12
This is taught as a year-long course, one period each semester. This two credit course focuses on the development of skills in business and design concepts as they apply to publishing the school yearbook. Students will learn the Macintosh OSX operating system, digital photography, advertising, journalism, organization, and management. One credit will be awarded for EBT (English, Communication in the World of Business and Technology) and a second credit will be awarded for TGG (Communications Technology).
Prerequisite: ENG3U1 or ENG3C1
Course Fee and Additional Requirements: Three staff recommendations must be supplied. Admission to the course will be decided by the instructor.
ENG4C1 English, Grade 12, College
This course emphasizes consolidation of literacy, critical thinking, and communication skills. Students will analyse informational texts and literary works from various time periods, countries, and cultures; write research reports, summaries, and short analytical essays; complete an independent study project; and analyse the interactions among media forms, audiences, and media industry practices. An important focus will be on establishing appropriate style and using business and technical language effectively.

This course emphasizes consolidation of literacy, critical thinking, and communication skills. An important focus will be on using specialized language related to the workplace accurately and coherently in appropriate contexts.

An important focus will be on understanding academic language and using it coherently and confidently in discussion and argument.

EWC4U1 The Writer’s Craft, Grade 12, University
This course emphasizes knowledge and skills related to the craft of writing. Students will analyse models of effective writing; use a workshop approach to produce a range of works; identify and use techniques required for specialized forms of writing; and identify effective ways to improve the quality of writing. They will also complete a major paper as part of a creative or analytical independent study project, and investigate opportunities for publication and for writing careers.

OLC4O1 Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course, Grade 12, Open
Please note: Even though OLC4O1 is a Grade 12 English credit, it does not fulfill the Grade 12 English requirement for post-secondary acceptance.
This course is designed to help students acquire and demonstrate the cross-curricular literacy skills that are evaluated by the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT). Students who complete the course successfully will meet the provincial literacy requirement for graduation. Students will read a variety of informational, narrative, and graphic texts and will produce a variety of forms of writing, including summaries, information paragraphs, opinion pieces, and news reports. Students will also maintain and manage a portfolio containing a record of their reading experiences and samples of their writing.

Food And Nutrition
The Family Studies Department offers HFN – Food and Nutrition at either the Grade 9 or Grade 10 level. A student can only take the Grade 9 OR the Grade 10 course.
Course Description – This course explores the factors that affect attitudes and decisions about food and examines current issues of body image and food marketing. Students learn how to make wise food choices and to prepare foods, and will investigate our Canadian food heritage and food industries, as well as global food issues. The course also introduces students to research skills related to food and nutrition.

Course Description – This course examines various nutritional, psychological, social, cultural, and global factors that influence people’s food choices and customs. Students will learn about current Canadian and worldwide issues related to food, frameworks for making appropriate dietary choices, and food preparation techniques. Course Description – This course explores the challenges faced by all people: how to meet basic needs, how to relate to others, how to manage resources, and how to become responsible members of society. Students will acquire knowledge and skills that are needed to make the transition to adulthood. Teachers will instruct students in developing interpersonal, decision-making, and practical skills related to daily life. Students will explore the functioning of families and the diversities found among families and within society.

Course Description – This course applies current theories and research from the disciplines of anthropology, psychology, and sociology to the study of individual development, family behaviour, intimate and parent–child relationships, and the ways in which families interact within the diverse Canadian society. Students will learn the interpersonal skills required to contribute to the well-being of families, and the investigative skills required to conduct and evaluate research about individuals and families.

Fashion And Creative Expression
Course Code – HNC3C1
Level – Grade 11, College
Course Description – This course explores what clothing communicates about the wearer and how it becomes a creative and entrepreneurial outlet through the design and production processes. Students will learn, through practical experiences, about the nature of fashion design; the characteristics of fibres and fabrics; the construction, production, and marketing of clothing; and how to plan and care for a wardrobe that is appropriate for an individual’s appearance, activities, employment, and lifestyle. Students will develop research skills as they explore the evolution of fashion and its relationship to society, culture, and individual psychology.

Course Description – This course provides a historical perspective on fashion and design, exploring the origins, influence, and importance of fashion as an expression of national, cultural, religious, and personal identity. Students will learn about the many facets of the Canadian fashion industry, including both large-scale and small entrepreneurial enterprises, and its worldwide links, as well as gaining practical experience in garment design, production, and care. This course also refines students’ skills used in researching and investigating various aspects of the fashion industry.

Course Description – This course focuses on the skills and knowledge needed to promote the positive and healthy nurturing of children, with particular emphasis on the critical importance of the early years to human development. Students will learn how to meet the developmental needs of young children, communicate and discipline effectively, and guide early behaviour. They will have practical experiences with infants, toddlers, and preschoolers, and will learn skills in researching and investigating questions relating to parenting.
Living And Working With Children

Course Description – This course focuses on the well-being of children in families and community settings. Students will study child behaviour and child development in the context of relationships with parents and others in the community, and will learn through research and by observing and interacting with children. This course prepares students for further study of children, familiarizes them with occupational opportunities related to working with children, and introduces them to skills used in researching and investigating children’s behaviour in response to others.

Course Description – This course enables students to acquire knowledge and skills related to health and safety in the food and beverage services sector of the tourism industry. Students will learn how to run events/caterings in the school and community which require the use of tools and equipment to develop an understanding of the fundamentals of providing high quality service.

FSF1D – Academic
This course provides opportunities for students to communicate and interact in French with increasing independence, with a focus on familiar topics related to their daily lives. Students will develop their skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing by using language learning strategies introduced in the elementary Core French program, and will apply creative and critical thinking skills in various ways. They will also enhance their understanding and appreciation of diverse French-speaking communities, and will develop skills necessary for lifelong language learning.

FSF1O – Open
This is an introductory course for students who have little or no knowledge of French or who have not accumulated the minimum of 600 hours of elementary Core French instruction. Students will begin to understand and speak French in guided and structured interactive settings, and will develop fundamental skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing through discussing issues and situations that are relevant to their daily lives. Throughout the course, students will develop their awareness of diverse French-speaking communities in Canada and acquire an understanding and appreciation of these communities. They will also develop a variety of skills necessary for lifelong language learning.

FSF2D – Academic
This course provides opportunities for students to communicate in French about personally relevant, familiar, and academic topics in real-life situations with increasing independence. Students will exchange information, ideas, and opinions with others in guided and increasingly spontaneous spoken interactions. Students will develop their skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing through the selective use of strategies that contribute to effective communication. They will also increase their understanding and appreciation of diverse French-speaking communities, and will develop skills necessary for lifelong language learning.

This course offers students extended opportunities to speak and interact in real-life situations in French with greater independence. - Please treat the library with respect. Other students expect and deserve a peaceful, attractive place to work or rest.

- Leave personal music players, food or drink, cell phones, etc. outside.
- Library computers are for class work only.
- Do not rearrange the furniture. Chairs and tables are arranged to minimize noise and distraction.
- Computers are usually booked by teachers for their classes. If you want to use one independently, sign the list on the circulation desk.
Plagiarism:
Plagiarism (from the Latin word plagiarius meaning “kidnapper”) occurs when a student submits work of another person and presents it as his / her own. Plagiarism is theft. It is not only the theft of someone else’s words, but also of someone else’s ideas. Plagiarism is deliberate academic dishonesty and is clearly outlined in On Your Own (41).

They will continue to increase their understanding of the elements of music while developing their technical and imaginative abilities. Students will also be given opportunities to network with community resources supporting these practices through guest instructors and class trips, and as such, a fee may be applied.

Science Award (monetary) is awarded to a deserving science student at Graduation every year. Funds are donated from the teachers and award recipient is also chosen by the teachers. Students will also consider the impact of technological applications of physics on society and the environment.

SNC 4M: Health Science
This course enables students, including those pursuing postsecondary programs outside the sciences, to increase their understanding of science and contemporary social and environmental issues in health-related fields. Students will explore a variety of medical technologies, pathogens and disease, nutritional science, public health issues, and biotechnology. The course focuses on the theoretical aspects of the topics under study and helps refine students’ scientific investigation skills. Prerequisite: Science, Grade 10, Academic, or any Grade 11 university, university/college, or college preparation course in science. .

Welcome to the Tech Department
STEM, Computer coding and Engineering, Skilled Trades, Construction, OYAP, Broadcasting, Digital Media, AutoCAD, Design, Transportation Innovations, Green Industries and Horticulture are all available at Saltfleet in our Technological Education Department. With new technology, innovative teaching and hands on experiences our Tech programs are informative, activity-based, and project driven. Our teachers have been there, done that and are giving their lived experiences to our students. Taking Tech courses will provide students with knowledge, skills, and real life work experience preparing them for apprenticeship, college, university, or the workplace. Welcome to the Visual Arts Department

Grade Nine Course
AVI1O1 Visual Arts, Grade 9, Open
This course offers an overview of visual arts as a foundation for further study. Students will become familiar with the elements and principles of design and the expressive qualities of various materials through working with a range of materials, processes, techniques, and styles. They will learn and use methods of analysis and criticism and will study the characteristics of particular historical periods and a selection of Canadian art and the art of other cultures.

A VI4M 1 Visual Arts, Grade 12, University/College
This course focuses on the refinement of students’ skills and knowledge in visual arts. Students will analyse art forms; use theories of art in analyzing and producing art; and increase their understanding of stylistic changes in modern and contemporary Western art, Canadian (including Native Canadian) art, and art forms from various parts of the world. Students will produce a body of work demonstrating a personal approach.

AWQ4M1 Photography, Grade 12, University/College
This course introduces new and advanced techniques in the dark room; including multiple exposures and combination prints. Digital manipulation of the photograph using Photo Shop software will be explored.
Prerequisites: AWQ3M1
